Our Story

Pumpkin Patch Fundraisers began in 1974 with three acres of pumpkins in North Carolina and a simple agreement with one church. There were no contracts, no lawyers — just a handshake and a shared belief in doing what’s right.

The church would sell the pumpkins. We would grow them. We would share the proceeds. That spirit of trust became the foundation of everything that followed.

Richard and Janice Hamby continued growing pumpkins — and partnerships — year after year. Our model is still uncommon in today’s business world. We take on all the costs of growing, harvesting, and shipping. We even assume the risk of loss from theft or spoilage so our partners can focus on running a successful patch. In return, we rely on our partner organizations to sell faithfully, report honestly, and share proceeds as agreed.

It’s a relationship built not on paperwork, but on integrity.

After Hurricane Hugo struck North Carolina, we relocated our farming operations to the Navajo Nation near Farmington, New Mexico. Working in cooperation with the Navajo Nation, we now grow approximately 1,200 acres — nearly two square miles — of pumpkins.

Each September and October, more than 700 Native Americans are employed during harvest season. Our full-time New Mexico staff is entirely Native American as well. In a region facing significant unemployment, this partnership provides meaningful work and lasting economic impact.

What started with one church has grown into a nationwide family of more than 1,000 organizations across the continental United States. We now serve 25 denominations along with schools, youth groups, fraternal organizations, Knights of Columbus councils, Scouts, Habitat groups, and many other civic organizations.

Today, the next generation is fully engaged. The Hambys’ son, John, now plays a key leadership role in the company—helping guide operations, strengthen partnerships, and carry the vision forward. He is actively building on the foundation of faith, hard work, and trust that has defined the family business from the beginning.

More than five decades later, the foundation remains the same:

A handshake.

A promise kept.

And pumpkins grown with purpose.
